Winter 2023

Join your favorite Michigan Pops Orchestra for a star-studded, picture-perfect evening! We welcome you on the red carpet as we highlight Oscar-worthy films; from traveling to a galaxy far, far away, to trekking in Howl’s Moving Castle, all the way to chasing dreams a-la La La Land, we hope you enjoy your time with Pops as we aspire to deliver award-winning performances!

TICK TOCK, IT’S POPS O’CLOCK!
Fall 2022

Welcome to “Tick Tock It’s Pops O’Clock” an adventure through time with your very own Michigan Pops Orchestra! Our itinerary includes playing Quidditch at Hogwarts, observing (and running from) dinosaurs at Jurassic Park, zipping through space and time in the Enterprise, and attending your parents’ high school prom after “accidentally” time traveling in the DeLorean.

The Phantom of the Opera; Andrew Lloyd Webber (arr. Calvin Custer)

FROM POPS, WITH LOVE
Fall 2019

Love comes in many different forms and so often finds us in the most unexpected of ways, so it is our privilege tonight to share some of our musical takes on romantic love. The soaring high notes will send your heart fluttering, the infectious jazz swing might set your feet tapping, and the floating bass lines will inspire you as the sounds of love fill the concert hall. Just as not all love stories close with happy endings, your ears may also find romantic melodies tinged with heartache and longing, refusing to let us forget that love can be found in the struggles and unpredictability of life.

Pokemon Medley; Junichi Masuda (arr. Soto)

POPS BRAVES THE ELEMENTS
Winter 2019

At first, the four elements are some of what allow this orchestra to provide astounding entertainment to the Ann Arbor community. The air inhabits our wind and brass players’ instruments, while the earth creates proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates that fuel the cellular processes of all of our musicians. That in turn allows us to have the energy to move and produce this wonderful sensation we call music. With these elements, we can give back and provide on our own.

Suite From "Star Wars" - Throne Room & End Title; John Williams

THE REIGN OF POPS
Fall 2018

Welcome to the majestic grounds of the Pops Kingdom, where lions can’t wait to be king, where kissing a frog could turn one into royalty, where swans glide just around our magnificent riverbend, and where people come from a galaxy far, far away in order to get a glimpse of our enchanting castle. I hope you all enjoy your time at Pops Kingdom as we share our musical crown jewels with you this evening.

Orchestral Suite from "Aladdin"; Alan Menken (arr. Troob)

ONCE UPON A POPS
Winter 2018

It is a unique trait of humanity to be able to tell stories — to pass on legends, to share myths and folklore, to tell tales that bring us to another world. Even more profound is our ability — our gift — to tell stories without speaking a word. This winter, the Michigan Pops Orchestra is proud to present a concert that is sure to be one for the books.

Jupiter from "The Planets"; Gustav Holst

INTERGALACTIC POPS
Fall 2017

It was once the case that space stood as a symbol in our lives; a frontier to be conquered, an expanse to be understood, a mystery to be discovered. Today, our lives are hasty and chaotic. Most often, we forget what it meant to yearn for something as incredible as the unknown. It is my hope that tonight will be a reminder of the beauty in the beyond, and our common fascination with what lies just past the clouds.

Chicago; John Kander (arr. Ted Ricketts)
